About the Workshop

Lean Software Development takes the principles and practices of lean manufacturing (adapted from the Toyota Production System) and applies them to software development.  Its core principals revolve around: elimination of waste, amplified learning, make decisions as late as possible, deliver as fast as possible, empowered teams, integrity and a holistic view.

Participants will:

  * be introduced to Lean Software Development.
  * compare how Lean and Agile Principles align.
  * contrast Lean practices that may be at odds with Agile.
  * create a Value Stream Map in class
  * learn about standard work and A3 reports

NOTE:  Please make sure you are able to attend this session.  Seating is limited and on a first-come, first-served basis.  We want to give everyone the opportunity to attend, so please only sign-up if you are committed to attending.  (These sessions are valuable to both newbies and experienced alike).

About the Facilitators

John D. Heintz is a husband, father, developer, Agilist, entrepreneur. After studying electrons in college, John's intuition led him to pursue software, and he's been a digital craftsmen since. Always seeking solutions with higher leverage and deeper simplicity has led John to important methods and tools. John's approach to building systems and teams started with leading his first Scrum team in 1999, included XP and TDD, and now Agile and Lean methods are part of his daily work and consulting.

John applies hard earned technical knowledge to system development to understand both the long term architectural vision, and the small steps that can begin toward that goal. Some of John's early expertise - OO, design patterns, and enterprise systems - have evolved into functional programming, distributed actors, and RESTful Web Architecture.

Andrew Cahoon has more than 25 years experience in development and management of high tech solutions (supercomputers, microprocessors, hardware, firmware, software) with a strong emphasis on Continuous Improvement. His forrmal education includes a BS Computer Engineering (Illinois), an Executive MBA (Oregon), and Lean training (Toyota, Porsche, McKinsey). Most recently, he has started to pursue PMP certification from PMI, while he continues to learn about Agile and Lean methods. In his spare time, he enjoys family activities and doing volunteer work with robotics organizations in the Austin area.

AgileAustin Workshops

The AgileAustin Workshops are facilitator lead discussions on Agile related topics.  Facilitators volunteer their own time to create the materials and are encouraged to provide hands-on experience through exercises done inside the class.  More than just a slide-show lecture, individuals (both new and practiced) who attend share their own ideas and experiences helping add to the learning environment.

If you are passionate about Agile and would like to help facilitate a topic of your own please contanct ncancelliere@gmail.com for more details.

When you arrive for the workshop, refreshments will be present.  Agile Austin wishes to thank Rally Software  <http://www.rallydev.com/>for their continued support of our community as well as ACC for providing the room.
